Temple of Zeus
The Temple of Zeus, located in the heart of Athens, Greece, is dedicated to the Olympian god Zeus. Built in second century B.C., the temple originally boasted 104 massive Corinthian columns. The temple was believed to have been destroyed in third century AD as today only fifteen columns remain standing on the temple. The sack of Athens in 267 by the Herulians was believed to be the cause of the fall, and too much damage was done to the city to repair the temple. The temple was believed to additionally boast many statues of Zeus, but none of those remain. The photo on the bottom left depicts the temple with the acropolis in the background, about one third of a mile away. Below to the right, the detailed Corinthian column style is depicted.
